A Mississippi man was found dead in the back of a squad car after being arrested for possession of drugs in Jonesboro, AR.
21-year-old, Chavis Carter, was searched and handcuffed behind his back after police officers found marijuana on him. The boy’s mother, Teresa Carter, believes there is something the police is not telling her.
“I can’t see how, I can’t see how,” said Teresa.
Sgt. Lyle Waterworth, of the Jonesboro Police Dept., says protocol was followed.
“As protocol, he was handcuffed behind his back, double locked and searched,” said Waterworth.
But Waterworth does admit that the gun was missed by his officers. Something he says can easily happen.
“Any given officer has missed something on a search,” said Waterworth. “Be it drugs, be it knives, be it razor blades. This instance happened to be a gun,” he said.
But Teresa says the explanation for what happened to her son is simple.
“I think they killed him,” said Teresa. “I mean, my son wasn’t suicidal,” she said.
At this point, all she wants is answers.
“I just want to know what really happened. That’s all I want to know,” she said.
The Jonesboro Police Department is looking at all angles now, even the possibility that Chavis may have been shot by someone else. The two police officers who were there that night are currently on leave pending the investigation.
